Monday, November 27th
Well this week started off good and bad for me. I had a great weekend at home with the kids again. Kaitlyn and I went out and bought a Christmas Tree after we watched the show on Sunday. She picked everything out and did most of the decorating, while Trey ran around like a crazy man. He kept grabbing ornaments and taking off laughing at us. It was a great time. Kaitlyn decorated the tree in blue and silver, it really looks great. We pretty much camped out at home all weekend since the kids were still sick. The bad news is…….they gave it to me ! So I took the kids to school this morning, packed all of my stuff up for the upcoming three-week swing and headed to King Pin to work for the day. I had about a dozen lessons this afternoon, and I got out of town around 6:00 or so. I kept feeling worse the longer I drove, so I finally stopped around Elkhart, In. I’ll drive the rest in the morning. |

Tuesday, November 28th
Looks like this may be a long week because my cold hit me very hard last night. I drove the remaining few hours this morning into Wickliffe ( just east of Cleveland ) and went straight to the bowl. I unloaded my truck and changed clothes so I could practice for a while. We were here a couple of years ago, and I remembered this place was wood with questionable topography. Since then, they had installed 20’ of guardian. I started practicing and I noticed right away that I was continuing to break down physically. I was out of breath after about 15 minutes of practice and I was sweating buckets. I only practiced about an hour and I pretty much played out most of the time. It looks like the gutter will be in play again this week, especially with the amount of friction on the lane. After practice I headed to the hotel to check in and unload my stuff, then I headed up to the mall to get a haircut ( the worst haircut I’ve ever had on the road !!! ). After that, Schlem and I headed over to Friday’s to grab a little dinner ( I barely ate, which is rare for me ! ). We hung out for a little while, then I went back to the hotel and went straight to bed. I took some medicine that pretty much knocked me out, hoping that I would feel better when I woke up. |

Wednesday, November 29th
No such luck on feeling better, at least not yet. I woke up early, planning on going to the bowl for the TQR. Sapp isn’t bowling this week because he’s pretty busy with the bar that he owns and I called Zicha to see if he was coming or not. He decided to stay home this week, so I said heck with it and went back to sleep. I finally woke up at the crack of noon and started moving around and getting ready. I got to the bowl around 3:30 and bowled my practice session. I practiced off and on for the 90 minutes, using pretty much the same balls that I had used last week. Just as I expected, the out was in play so I camped out and just worked on my swing. Then I waited around to do the Turbo Grips photo shoot. That took about an hour or so, then Lori ( Tessmar ) took the entire team to Bahama Breeze for dinner. I still wasn’t feeling well, so after dinner I headed back to the hotel, watched some CSI and went to sleep.

Thursday, November 30th -- Round of 64 Block 1
Game 1 ( 214 ) – Two blower 7s, ring 10’s and a 4 pin. I made a bad shot in the 7th, getting a little slow. I moved 2 and 1 left anyway and bailed out 214.
Game 2 ( 171 ) – We followed Jim Pratt and he was using a plastic ball, playing the same part of the lane as we were. Instantly we had hang at our breakpoint. I started with a 2-7, followed by a 2-8 and a 2-pin. I kept fudging right and finally found something but I left a blower 7-10 in the 7th. After a strike in the 8th I left a Greek Church in the 9th. Lane 54 was one of the bad lanes in the building ( along with 55 ). In my opinion these pairs should’ve been taken out of play.
Game 3 ( 228 ) – My first shot hooked at my toe. I checked and sure enough, Eugene started on this pair. Usually Eug likes to use surface so he can throw it 100 mph up the gutter. That’s great for him, but not the guys that follow him. I moved 3-2 left and then two-pinned. I tripled after that, but I was still lost. After a split in the 6th and some mediocre bowling to finish up the game, my momentum had been temporarily stopped.
Game 4 ( 269 ) – I left a 2-pin in the first frame, then I watched the other 3 guys go light on that lane. The right lane was the same as the last pair, but switched to a T-Struck Pearl on the left lane and bowled a solid game. I left another ring-10 in the fourth.
Game 5 ( 237 ) – This pair was similar to Lane 64, but I still had to bump left 2 and 1. I left a 4-pin in the second and a ring-10 in the 3rd and 5th
Game 6 ( 205 ) – Very disheartening game. Ring-10 in the second, blower 4-7-10 in the 5th ( just like the one Norm left on the Hammond show, but I made it !!! ). Then I left a ring-10 in the 6th, a solid 8 in the 7th and ring-10’s in the 9th and 11th.
Game 7 ( 245 ) – This was probably my best bowled game of the round. The pattern opened up on this pair and I was able to switch to a T-Road and jump in. I left a blower 7 in the 6th ( which I missed ), then I rang two 10-pins in the 10th.
Overall I felt pretty good about how I bowled in Round 1, especially for being as sick as I was. I went through several bottles of water, just trying to keep fluids in me. I finished the block at +169 in 12th place. The cut for the top 32 was +98. After we were done, we headed over to Damon’s to grab some lunch. Again, I didn’t eat very much and I still wasn’t feeling well.

Thursday, November 30th -- Round of 64 Block 2
I got back to the bowl, practiced for a little bit and then headed down to get ready to start. During our 15 minutes of practice, the lanes played similar to earlier but the left lane was very tricky. It was one of the roller coaster lanes and it was doing some very funny things.
Game 1 ( 216 ) – I started 4-pin, 4-bagger before I left a 4-pin in the 6th and a 10-pin in the 7th. I got the shot in the 9th going right in the wrong part of the lane and it never hooked., leaving a 1-2-4. I guess I didn’t win the stuffed animal on that lane because my spare shot hooked at my toe ( leaving the head pin ).
Game 2 ( 172 ) – Total disaster of a game in every way. I started with a 3-10 and made it. Then I went light a few times, then through the face a few times. I missed a 3-10 in the 6th and left a solid 9 in the 8th. I left a missed messenger 10 in the 10th and thought I had converted it, but the ball faded at the last second going into the gutter. I jumped back and forth between a Thunderstruck, a Thunderstruck Pearl and a T-Road trying to find something.
Game 3 ( 236 ) – Back on track with this game. I made 11 very good shots, but didn’t get rewarded like I would’ve wanted to. I went back to my T-Struck and played this pair like I did the first one, but left a solid 9 in the 2nd, a blower 7 in the 8th and another solid 9 in the 10th. The fill ball was pretty interesting though because I somehow left a blower 7-8-10. Don’t ask me how but you should’ve seen the look on Tony Reyes’ face when he saw it !!!
Game 4 ( 212 ) – Another disheartening game in a critical situation. I needed to continue the momentum that I had regained, but the strike gods weren’t with me here. Solid 9’s in the 3rd and 7th, coupled with a solid 7 ( which I inexcusably missed ) in the 6th really hurt.
Game 5 ( 181 ) – This game was the beginning of the downward spiral. The lanes were breaking down much faster than this morning and my ball ( no matter what I threw ) was coming out of the pattern sideways. I chopped a 3-6-9-10 and left a couple more solid 9’s this game. I was literally moving on every shot at this point.
Game 6 ( 188 ) –
This game really hurt….. A LOT !!! I started with a 4-pin and after a minor adjustment I left a 2-4-8-10. I went for the spare, but cut it a little short and the ball hooked a little too much getting 0. Then I proceeded to ring four 10-pins in a row and then two more in the 9th and 11th. I was ready to pull my hair out.
Game 7 ( 178 ) – By this time I was in danger of falling out of the top 32. The cut number was going up, but I was falling drastically. This pair was totally on fire. We were moving left in big jumps after every shot, but the ball was still hooking in the heads. I couldn’t find any push whatsoever. I started with a 3-6, then a 3-6-10. After a strike in the 3rd, I left a 4-6-7 in the 4th. I overthrew the shot in the 5th, leaving a 2-pin, then back through the face in the 6th leaving another 3-6-9-10 ( which I chopped again ). At that point I decided to just go with my gut instinct and I moved all the way back right to about where I had started. I threw a clutch double in the 7th and 8th to stop the bleeding, but rang yet another 10-pin in the 9th. I finished up with a clean 10th and salvaged the block, holding onto a spot in the top 32. After that disaster I was totally spent. I was drained mentally as well as physically, so I went straight to bed.

Friday, December 1 -- Round of 32 against Bill O'Neill
Today was my Dad’s birthday, so I was really hoping to give him a nice present ( other than the fact that he’s in 70+ degree weather, on a beach in Tampa ). I didn’t get any sleep last night because I was up coughing all night long. The medicine that I’m taking isn’t doing me any good and I’m not getting any better. I got going early this morning because I wanted to get to the bowl and try a few things during practice. I grabbed a Diablo and a Pyro off the truck and we adjusted surfaces, trying to find some other options. The effort was wasted because when I got to my starting pair for our 5 minutes of practice, I noticed right away that the gutter didn’t bounce like it did yesterday. That meant I’d have to hook it from the start. The reason I hadn’t done that all week long is the fact that my equipment was reading the back of the pattern too sharply, and without any hold that meant that if I was off on a shot I would leave an ugly design. I was bowling Bill O’Neill ( 2006 PBA Rookie of the Year ) and I knew he would be hooking it, but he has a little more ball speed than I do and his roll is more forward than mine, meaning that his ball wasn’t going to read the pattern as drastically as mine. I started with a T-Struck Pearl, standing around 30 and going through 15-16 at the arrows.
Game 1 ( 188 - 203 Loss) – I actually got off to a good start, but a solid 9 in the 5th broke my momentum. The left lane was hooking a lot more, and I kept fudging left on every shot. It finally caught up to me because I left a 3-4-6-10 in the 7th and a Big-4 in the 9th.
Game 2 ( 204 - 225 Loss) – Heartbreaking loss. I started with a 4-6 on the left lane. I moved again off of that and left a solid 9. No matter what I did, the left lane wasn’t allowing me to get anything going. I managed a 4-bagger, but left a blower 7-10 in the 8th. As it turns out, that cost me the game.
Game 3 ( 189 - 229 Loss) – I moved right on the left lane and went to a Thunderstruck. At this point I was playing both lanes totally different ( straight on the left lane and curving it on the right ) with two different balls. I felt like I had nothing to lose and this was the only way I could climb back into the match. I bowled a solid game, leaving four ring-10’s, a solid 9 and a solid 7, but the 3-6-7-10 ( I wrapped the 3 around the 7 on the spare ) did me in.
Game 4 ( 211 - 194 Win) – I continued on with what I had done the previous game, and lucky for me Bill’s carry percentage went down this game. I still didn’t strike a lot, but enough to get a game win. I left a blower 7 in the 1st, solid 8’s in the 5th and 7th and a 6-7-10 in the 10th. The game was already over, so I decided to try and move out on the right lane. I didn’t look very good so I scrapped that plan.
Game 5 ( 200 - 207 Loss) – Back to back blower 7’s in the 7th and 8th coupled with two 10-pins in the 10th pretty much sealed my fate. Since I didn’t strike in the 10th, that gave Billy the opportunity to step up and finish the match, which he did.
Bill bowled a great match. I know my carry percentage was extremely low, but his wasn’t exactly high either. He bowled a much better match that his scores indicate. Even if I struck at a higher clip, he would’ve had to continue with his rough carry for me to win. That wasn’t going to happen on this day. Afterwards, I loaded all of my equipment up on the truck ( except for the lone triple bag that I kept in the building for my pro-am ) and headed to grab some lunch. After a quick lunch it was back to bed ! I watched Superman Returns and some TV for a while before I was out. By the way, my review on Superman is : OK for the most part, I guess I expected more out of it. I pretty much laid around relaxing all day and finally got up and got moving around later that night. I was bored so I ran over to Toys R Us to look for some Christmas ideas for the kids and I stopped by Fridays on the way back to grab some dinner. After that I came back to the room and I’m going to bed early. Not much planned for the weekend, just a 3:00 pm pro-am tomorrow. I’m hoping that a lot of rest will get me feeling better for next week

Saturday, December 2nd
I was originally scheduled for the 6:00 pro-am, but Sean and I were switched to 3:00 ( which is fine by me – more rest !!! ). I couldn’t sleep any longer so I got up and watched some CSI before heading to the bowl. The noon pro-am squad was still going on, so I just hung out in the bleachers waiting to bowl. We bowled our pro-am, then I met Schlem and CJ at a sports bar over by my hotel to watch the USC-UCLA game. As a bonus for me, Illinois was playing Arizona at the same time. Now I know that my Illini aren’t ranked but they’re young and pretty talented. Losing to Maryland and Arizona ( 2 ranked teams ) at this point in the season isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a young team. I’m sure coach Bruce Weber will turn these 2 losses into positives and have the team ready for a run in March. I still wasn’t feeling well at all, so I only ate about half of my dinner. I went back to the room shortly after that. This cold is really kicking my #@% !!!

Sunday, December 3rd
Finally !!! I’m starting to feel better. I got up early this morning and did some work on the treadmill for the first time in a week. I didn’t get to spend much time in there due to the fact that I was still out of breath, but it was nice to do something again. I watched the show, then watched some football. Sean went with Rick Benoit to the Browns-Chiefs game, and we went to dinner after he got back. We headed down the street to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch some of the Denver-Seattle game ( Sean is a Broncos fan so I got to listen to him bitch about Jay Cutler all night….it was actually kind of funny – sorry Sean ! ). I finally had my appetite back and ate a full meal for the first time all week. We’re heading out to Baltimore in the morning and the time depends on the weather. It just started snowing here and I have a bad feeling. Hope I’m wrong.
Well that pretty much concludes my report for this week. I know it wasn’t exciting, but this cold pretty much took everything out of me this week. I’m actually somewhat happy with a 28th place finish as bad as I felt this week. It could’ve been a lot better, but it sure could’ve been a whole lot worse too. Next weeks report will be coming to you from Baltimore, Md. Until then as always, Bowl up a Storm.
